How to Get Rid of Forehead Acne

The forehead is one of the most common places for a breakout to occur and whilst there are some obvious explanations for forehead acne, there are also some less obvious factors that you might not be aware of:

1). Using hair products

Using hair products daily can be a cause for forehead acne as the ingredients used in them can clog your pores and ultimately trigger forehead acne. However, you don’t have to stop using your hair products. Just make sure to wash your hair thoroughly removing all of the product from your hair and skin, especially before bedtime as it can migrate from your hair onto your forehead while you sleep.

2). Using the wrong sunscreen

Be careful when choosing a sunscreen to avoid clogging your pores. We recommend using an acne treatment with SPF and a moisturising action. Make sure your chosen sunscreen has a wide range of protection against both UVA and UVB radiation (30 PPD, SPF 30). This makes it specific to protect your skin against solar radiation.

 

 

3). You’re not washing your pillowcases

Pillowcases have contact with your hair and face for the duration of the night becoming another source of acne. This is due to the bacteria and oils from our hair and mouth being transferred onto our pillowcases and then our faces, say Dr Nazarian. To avoid this trigger, keep your pillowcases clean and aim to wash or change them regularly.

4). Spending more time in the sun

Spending a lot of time in the sun can trigger forehead acne from the increased sweat building up and causing hair products etc. to flow onto the forehead.  Always ensure that you wear a sunscreen every day to prevent pigmentation from developing. The use of UV in chronic uncontrolled acne can often lead to less heat, sun and free radical damage and can calm aggressive acne symptoms down.

 

 

5). You’re not exfoliating

Exfoliating your skin at night ensures that you’re getting everything off your face from the day. Sunscreen, make up and sweat alongside dirt and grime can all clog up your pores if not removed properly. However we don’t recommend exfoliating in the morning, as this removes the natural moisturising factors that have been built up during the night. These have a UV protective effect and they also protect important immune control cells called Langerhans cells from UV damage. Exposing these to UV by exfoliating in the morning can compromise the immune status of your skin and also accelerate ageing.

6). Having too much sugar in your diet

As hard as those cravings might be to fight, having too much sugar in your diet can be another trigger of your forehead acne. Having too much sugar in your diet can lead to breakouts. We know that a high carbohydrate diet can exacerbate acne symptoms, it’s proven that diet can influence your acne. Remember the Eskimo or Inuit to more properly name them never encountered acne until they were introduced to Western diet high in carbs. Their high fish and blubber diet packed with omegas oils also meant their skin was oil and lipid rich and so skin moisture control was excellent. Supplementing your diet with Omega oils particularly is a good anti acne choice.

 

 

7). Your hormones

Both women and men can suffer from a forehead breakout due to natural hormone fluctuations, birth control pills may also be a trigger but there are topical and oral medications that can help treat this type of acne.

8). Wearing over-the-ear headphones

If music and headphones are some of your must-haves, then make sure you are properly cleaning your headphones with antibacterial wipes before using them to avoid transferring the dirt and bacteria from the headphones onto your skin.

 

 

9). Using a towel during your workouts

Wiping off your sweat with a towel at the gym can be another trigger for forehead acne. Studies have shown that after hanging your towel over your exercise equipment at the gym, can mean your towel could have as much bacteria as a toilet seat. To avoid this, use a facial wash after your workout.

10). Wearing the same hat or headband

Washing your hats and cloth hair accessories might not always be the first thing on your laundry list but if you continue to wear these without washing them this can also lead to a forehead breakout. Wearing a hat all day can cause breakouts as sweat and make-up gets trapped around the rim and if your headband slides down your forehead from time to time this can transfer dirt and bacteria to your skin. You can still continue to wear these without fear of a forehead breakout as long as you make sure you wash them regularly.
